Adrian dragged his father’s lifeless body out of the pit.
There was a flickering light. He could see his father’s pale face. A piece of
metal rod pierced through his chest. He was gone.
Adrian gave him a kiss on his forehead and said goodbye. At
fourteen years of age, he was maturing fast. Suddenly, the whole world changed.
His father died, his mother wounded. Adrian went back to his mother. Her right
shoulder was shattered. She could not move her right arm. Adrian got a piece of
clothing strip and tied the right arm to her chest so that it would not be
dangling. He put her left arm around his neck and helped her walk. They found a
little room inside the casino. There was a case of bottled water.
“Adrian, I want to see your father.”
“Mom, not now. Get some rest.”
Mona cried. Sobbing. Everything happened so quickly. They
had plans. They had big plans. Her husband just competed his infectious disease
training. He got an offer to join a group in Las Vegas. They would be closer to
her in-laws. They could buy a better house. They could take a vacation with Adrian.
But, none of those mattered anymore. The world they knew just ended.
